Our Senior Girls Volleyball team had a great showing at the School Sport 2A Volleyball Provincials this past weekend in Roddickton. It was quite a long drive for our girls but they made the long trip and made the most of this opportunity. The Girls lost their opening match on Thursday night to the host Roddickton team 17 – 25, 25 – 23, and 15-17 in an extremely close third game. They then went on to beat Cape John Collegiate 25 – 8, 25 -14 and Bay D’espoir 25 – 15, 25 – 18 on Friday to solidify a playoff spot for Saturday.
In the semi-final Random Island would face Lakewood Academy, one of the favorites to win the tournament. It was a hard fought match and it came down to the wire. In the end the Girls fell to the team from Glenwood 22 – 25, 25 – 19, 13 15. Many called it the match of the tournament and the atmosphere was described as ‘electric’ as many of the hometown fans cheered on our girls. Our girls fought hard to the end and represented us very well. We are all extremely proud of your efforts!
Isabella Modesto, our only graduating team member, was awarded the Individual Sportsmanship Medal at Friday nights banquet. Being her last Provincial tournament, it was an emotional experience for Isabella; you will be missed by your teammates and coach next year for sure!
A big thank you to Mrs. Stephanie Smith for traveling with the team and for all your coaching efforts. Another thank you goes to Kim Hansford for driving the team and all the parents who traveled (especially Barb Simmons who kept Mr. Cook updated with her tweets!) Mrs. Smith’s team is in great shape for next year as she has 11 returning players. You will get them next year Girls! GO CRUSADERS!!!
