We would like to congratulate John Martin, Adrianna Martin, and John Frye on representing us so well at the 2018 SSNL Table Tennis Qualifier. All three students competed in the individual tournament and John M. & John F. competed in the doubles tournament where they won a bronze medal. Well done everyone! And, thank you to Mr. Mulrooney for coaching and taking the team to Bishop White on Thursday!
The Senior Boys Basketball team will be heading to Provincials at St. Mary’s (Dunne Memorial Academy) next week after capturing the Regional Banner with a win over St. Mark’s. The Crusaders defeated the Lions to capture the SSNL Avalon West ‘A’ Boys Basketball Regional title. We would like to thank Mr. Glen O’Driscoll and the boys from St. Mark’s for coming up and competing! The boys have had a pretty good season thus far as they have previously captured the tier III banner at the Cougar Classic in Clarenville early this winter. We look forward to seeing them represent us at the Provincials next week. Go Crusaders!!!
It was a great Regional Softball qualifier for the Boys yesterday in Clarenville. The boys went 1-1 in round robin play defeating St. Marks School and losing a close game to Tricentia Academy. The crusaders earned a spot in the finals under the lights but unfortunately it was not meant to be for them as Tricentia played a great game and RIA came up short. We would like to acknowledge all of the support as It was great to see so many of our school community members there to cheer on our boys. We would like to congratulate Curtis Vardy on winning the sportsmanship medal and all the boys on your silver medals. We would especially like to thank Kristina Hansford for all your efforts with the boys as this experience would not have been possible without your dedication! Congratulations to the Timberwolves…we wish you best of luck at Provincials!
This past Tuesday, students from St. Marks School came to RIA to participate in our after school program Jamboree. It was a great afternoon of activities! Thanks to Mr. Baker for organizing this program and event and to Gregory Hoskins, Brianna Green, Emily Simmons, Belle Simmons, and Hayley Macdougall for your efforts in running this program all year!
Congratulations to Both the Junior Girls and Boys Basketball teams on having successful weekends of basketball. The Junior Girls played host to the NLBA 9 & Under C Provincials; the girls played well and it was a fun experience for them as it was their first junior basketball provincials. Teachers parents and coaches commended our team for their motivation and staying positive throughout the tournament; many remarked that they are a ” great group of girls”. Congratulations to Sabrina Martin, Adrianna Martin and Hayley Macdougall on winning players of the game and big thanks to all the girls who helping and showing a great deal of respect to the other teams!
The Junior Boys were in St. John’s and had a great weekend going 2-1 in round robin play defeating St. John Bosco and Roncalli and losing to Holy Trinity. The boys finished second in their division and faced the host Brother Rice in the Semi-Finals. They boys played well and carried themselves well all weekend, but were defeated in playoffs. Congratulations to Sawyer Collins, Peter Martin, Devin Kelly, and Cody King for being named players of the game.
A Big thank you to all volunteers who helped out at RIA this past weekend and thank you to Ms. Victoria Power, Mr. Darren Avery, Mr. Naasson Lambert, and Mr. Cook for volunteering and giving up your weekends for a great group of young guys and girls!

This past weekend a new Boys A Basketball champion was crowned at Random Island Academy. The Viking Trail Trail Blazers defeated the St. Catherine’s Eagles 90-88 in a nail biter that came down to the last 10 seconds of the game. Your Crusaders achieved their goal of making the playoffs as the went 2-1 in round robin play and tied for first in their division; they defeated eventual finalists St. Catherine’s, and Fitzgerald Academy and lost to Valmont Academy. The Crusaders ended up playing and being defeated by the eventual champions, Viking Trail, in the Semi Finals. The other semi-final saw St. Catherine’s defeat Holy Name of Mary.
The school was alive with basketball fever as fans from all over the province cheered for their teams. Our school community delivered some fantastic hospitality as everyone chipped in to make a lasting experience.
We have to thank all the student volunteers who did the score keeping, sweeping, selling tickets/water, working in the canteen, and everything else we needed from them. You guys are all fantastic!!! We also have to thank the staff at Random Island for your support and all you provided to the hospitality room. We have a BIG THANK YOU to the parents for their hard working in preparing for and working in the canteen and banquet, and getting the school back into shape after the tournament. This tournament wouldn’t have been possible without your efforts!!! We would also like to thank Ms. Power and Ms. Marsh for your help with the skills competition (among other duties), Mr. Blackmore, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Power for the opening ceremonies, and of course Sandy for everything…literally everything….tournament preparation, team registrations and taking so much time after hours helping us. Thank you to ms. Smith for giving up your weekend and taking care of much of the convening…couldn’t have done it without you. And a BIG THANK YOU to Mr. Cook and Mr. Mulrooney for your efforts in coaching the boys and giving so much time in preparation for and hosting of this tournament.
This tournament was a great demonstration of what our school community can do…and we have a great School Community!!!

A HUGE congratulations goes out to Candace Butt who captured the Bronze Medal at the SSNL Provincial Table Tennis Championships. Candace competed in the female singles division and represented RIA incredibly well! She is now one of the top female table tennis players in our province. You have made us really proud Candace! A thank you also goes out to MR. Baker who traveled to Provincials this past weekend; thank you for your time and efforts!
Students at RIA are active and involved! It is great to see so much happening in our building! We can’t say enough about how great our students are and we want you to continue to stay focused on academics while still having all the fun the comes with co-curricular activities.
A BIG congratulations to our Student Council for hosting such a great Semi-Formal Dance last night! It was a great evening with lots of fun, food, and of course, dancing! Thank you to our Student Council Executive and Teacher Sponsors, Mrs. Smith & Mr. Abbott, and for all the teacher chaperons including Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Cook, Mr. Mulrooney, and Mr. Blackmore…Well done everyone! And finally, thank you to all our students that came and supported and had fun…you guys are great!
Candace Butt Will Be Representing RIA at Table Tennis Provincials
Random Island Academy has not sent students to Table Tennis Provincials in quite some time, but Candace Butt has earned her position and will represent us extremely well…of that we have no doubt! Candace will be playing in the Female Singles category at the SSNL Provincials at Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts this Weekend. Good Luck and Have a great time!!!
Gold For Senior Girls Basketball
Congratulations to our Senior Girls Basketball team on winning Gold at Regionals yesterday in Kings Cove. The girls beat St. Marks 46 – 17 to earn a spot at the Provincial tournament hosted by St. Joseph’s. The SSNL Provincials will be starting March 11. A big thank you goes out to Mr. Baker and Ms. Marsh for your efforts in coaching this team, it is appreciated! Good luck at Provincials Crusaders!
Another Good Showing From Junior Boys Basketball
Our Junior Boys Basketball team moves to 2 – 1 on the season with a 49 – 46 win over CMS on Wednesday night. Great job guys! Thank you to our coaches, Mr. Darren Avery and Mr. Jon Stone and student coach Naasson Lambert for all your efforts with the boys! Great work and keep it up Crusaders!!!
RIA is having its Anti-bullying Day assembly next Wednesday which will include some music, a Glee performance, a Drama performance, and most importantly, some awareness about a serious topic. Don’t forget that we are also wearing PINK that day Crusaders! The performances at the assembly will also be presented to out entire school community next Thursday night. We hope to see everyone there!!!
Senior Boys Basketball Headed to Rashoon for Invitational This Weekend
The Senior Boys Basketball team will be playing in the Kenway Classic this weekend which is hosted by Christ the King in Rashoon. The Boys will be playing off against Christ the King (Rashoon), Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Fortune Bay Academy (St. Bernard’s), and St. Lawrence Academy. Congratulations to all our Table Tennis players who represented RIA extremely well yesterday at the Regional Table Tennis Qualifiers at Bishop White School. Congratulations to our crusader team for putting up a great fight in the Semi-Finals of the SSNL 2A Girls Provincials this past weekend. Unfortunately they ran into the host team with a lot of momentum and they fell short after a 3 game battle (18-25, 25-18, and 9-15). Great effort ladies…you had a great weekend and made us proud!
Crusaders now 2-1 as they have just beaten Labrador Straits Academy (25-11, 25-11). RIA will now face the host team, King Academy, tomorrow morning in the semi-finals! Good luck and play hard Crusaders!!!

Our Senior Girls Volleyball team left yesterday for Harbour Breton for the SSNL 2A Volleyball Provincials. They arrived safely and played their first match against Lakewood Academy (Glenwood) last evening. RIA lost to the number 1 seeded Lakewood Academy team in 3 sets (18-25, 25-22, 8-15). It was a tough first match but the girls played well.
